Every once in a while I just can't take it anymore and must have a cookie. Vitale's is now the only place I get them. With such a big selection, I can get 3 or 4 totally different kinds each time and never get the same kind twice. That's not really the case though, as I really have a real fondness for the peanut butter tartlets, the anise cookies (just like my Nonna made), and their biscottis. I do enjoy trying the different kinds each time though! Vitale's has a great selection of breads and rolls, plus they have pre-made pizza crusts and ready-to-go dough. Make this one of your stops while on The Hill and you won't be disappointed!

We had been to the hill for lunch after a day at the zoo with myself and other members of my family and while we were munching down on grub it was decided that we all needed to go across the street to this establishment! I have had their bread on occasion so I knew that it was good and delicious but, holey moley! I walked into the best smells ever and noticed the long refrigerated counters with many goodies in there calling my name (not that I should be eating sweets, but sometimes you have to!) I agree with some of the other posters about the cannoli, they are THAT good! My eyes fell on those tasty treats first because when your on the hill, you just have to get some. I also bought some of the creme horns and gooey butter cookies and bread. The only drawback that I could complain about was that they are cash or check only, but that is a small complaint.

I had a head to head challenge of biscotti today between Missouri Baking Company and Vitale's. Hands down, Missouri Baking Company. That, and the service far surpassed that of Vitale's.

We were in a serious search for canoli - good canoli. Got recommendations from two bakeries in The Hill neighborhood and took home canoli from both. After a blind tasting, the family vote was unanimous: Vitale's has the best canoli and The Missouri Baking Co came in a clear second place.

Now I'm not so big on baked goods, and I'm also not much on giving out five stars, but words can't describe how happy I am that a place like this still exists and thrives. This is what makes the Hill such a special place - it's a true neighborhood that refuses to move on to modern times and behaves in many ways like it's the 50's. Neighbors know each other, streets are bustling with people and shops don't feel a need to be everything to everyone, allowing to focus on what they do best. Much of the country is finally getting back to its roots and finding little gems like this that are run by families instead of heading to the Evil Empire to throw more money in their coffers. At Vitlale's, we tried a few butter cookies, a ricotta pastry and a loaf of bread. All of it just excellent. More importantly, though, we were charmed, depite a couple of nods to crass commercialism over in the corner (faggedaboudit t-shirt, anyone?). I'm also happy a place like Vitale's doesn't need my business or my 5-star Yelp review. There are several bakeries on the HIll, and while I'd like to think they wouldn't still be in business if St. Louis didn't recognize quality when they see it, I think the reality is a lot of people just want a reminder of how America used to be.

Seriously delicious cookies. Seriously! They have a huge variety of cookies available by the pound. They're about $10.50 a pound which is expensive, yes, but they are so worth it for the occassional treat. The rainbow layer cookies, or Italian flag cookies as some people call them, are the best! They also make a mean gooey butter cookie, cannoli, cream puffs, etc. Sweet treats aside, they also bake a variety of bread and offer other Italian goods in their freezer like meats and frozen pizzas. Service probably gets better the more times you visit. Pretty typical for establishments on the Hill. Man, I think I need to go buy some cookies now.

Great selection of cookies, pastries, and breads. I had purchased some cannoli's, ricotta puff and ravioli from their refrigerated section. Lets just say, I couldn't wait to consume my pastries. Unfortunately half way through my ricotta puff I encountered a long piece of hair baked into the dough. Disgusting! When it was returned to the bakery, the girl working the counter says, "it happens." My thoughts are, not if your employees wear hair nets. Lets just say I will not be retuning to this bakery.

Their cannoli is just delicious! It was the best I've ever had. They also have a good selection of bread and cookies. We got cannolis, the ricotta puffs and a pound of cookies to go! I love sweets and you can't go wrong with their cannolis!

Like all the other places we visited in St. Louis, the people working in the bakery were polite, respectful, helpful. This bakery is in the Hill, an Italian neighborhood with great restaurants and shops. We ordered three pounds of Italian cookies, canolis, baklava, and tiramisu. I never had the chance to sample the tiramisu as it was gobbled by my husband in ten seconds. The thing about Italian cookies is that they often taste bland and starchy when mass-produced (the way you see them in grocery stores), and the flavors (anise, almond, egg, butter) are often toned down, so that they don't taste anything like the way they look. Vitale's is the real thing. The flavors shine and the textures are crisp. The store also sells frozen ravioli and gelato. Wish I could have tried the pistachio gelato.

Vitale's is another gem in St. Louis. Its located right in the heart of the best neighborhood in the city and has the freshest bread around. Now listen, I love Missouri Baking Company as much as anyone and think the world of the owner. That being said, Vitale's has they best loaf's of fresh bread and the best canoli's in STL. I went in yesterday to get both, and as always they came through. The only problem with going to a place like Vitale's is that it immediately ruins your patience for shitty bread the rest of your life. You will never want to eat a roast beef sando, or a salami or a sausage or an Italian beef on anything but a Vitale's loaf again. Bring cash - no credit cards accepted.

Biscotti as tasty as Nonna's (but God, please don't tell her, I'd be excommunicated from la famiglia!). Pignoli cookies, butter cookies, panettone, ricotta cheesecakes, all manner of anise-scented delicacies, cannolis out the wazoo--Vitale's has the Italian baked goods of your childhood with your bocce-playing great-grandfather and his baking-fool daughters (including my Nonna). You can't help but eat something before you're even out the door. Mangia, mangia!!

Everything that I have tried here is good. I am so glad I have a budding chef in the family who turns me on to these places. I love getting their cookies and desserts. The breads and such are fantastic too, but I have a real sweet tooth and the real reason I go are for the desserts. Everyone is nice here, and usually when I go there are customers who all seem to know each other. This is just a neat place to go to get some wonderful food.

There is never a point in your life when you miss saying "Nona" Vitale's is one of my greatest memories growing up. My Godmother would always get us "Seed cookies" from here when we went to the Bocce club and we wanted a snack. Now I take my nieces there to get some cookies and it's always a fun family trip to stop in and say hello when someone is in town.

I've stopped in this place a few times after eating at Steve's across the street for dessert purposes. Great treats and such. After all, it is a bakery and bakeries are never a letdown for me. Actually the only real downer is they do not accept any plastic. Wish they can keep up on the times. Not to sound like el cheapo but hopefully you get the idea.

This business is family run and they are totally customer service oriented. They are so kind and helpful. I love their bread. We go out if our way to come here and support them. And their products are superior. Good bread makes a difference.!

we are big fans of nora's deli which apparently gets their amazing bread rolls from vitales bakery...but not only did we find bread rolls, but fresh pasta and an assortment of italian cookies-all of the raspberry ones are my favorites. CASH or check only!

Holy. Freaking. Cannoli. No, seriously. The best cannoli I've ever had in my life. I don't know what their recipe is, but I really hope they never change it. Vitale's is one of those bakeries that just screams "local." Family run, looks like it hasn't been updated for years and years, and I have the feeling their recipes have stayed the same, too. What really won me over is something that happened a few weeks ago. I needed to pick up some bakery items so I called to see if they were open. They weren't, but the owner told me to come anyway and just come through the back door in the alley. When I walked in, he took me into the bakery where he had everything waiting for me in a neat little bag. Seriously? His generosity really touched me. Go in and buy a variety of cookies by the pound. I often go to my parents for dinner on Sunday, and I love bringing a bunch of Vitale's cookies over. Everybody goes crazy over them! I really need to try their bread soon, too. There's nothing I don't love about this place. Go give this great family-run business some love! You won't be sorry.

After my delicious lunch at Eovaldi's, the guy behind the counter suggested that I go to Vitale's Bakery for dessert. As a girl with a sweet tooth, I just had to try it out. He told me that the cannolis were first class, but I really ought to try the ricotta puff (kind of like cannoli filling inside a doughnut) Vitale's is just what I imagined as an Italian neighborhood bakery. There were rows upon rows of cookies, breads, eclairs, tiramisu, and all kinds of tasty goodies. I walked out with an entire sack of deliciousness including 6 cookies, 2 brownies, 2 cannolis and 2 ricotta puffs (which rocked my world). Two special notes: There is an entire case of sugar-free goods for those who want (or have) to limit their sugar intake. And, Vitale's does not accept credit cards, so have your cash or check ready.
